Inside vs. Outside Bets: What’s the Best Bet When Playing Roulette?

Roulette is the most popular table casino game, as players have an opportunity to select plenty of available bets. If you’re new to this game, you might be confused with so many options that you have.

However, you need to know is that bets in roulette can be divided into two main categories — inside and outside bets. What are those, and how are they different from each other?

Essentially, inside bets are the bets that you make on numbers. Therefore, as long as you just place chips on a single number or more, you’ll be making inside bets.

On the other hand, outside bets are everything else. For example, most land-based and online roulette games allow you to bet whether the ball will land on a black or a red number, and you get to bet on that.

Moreover, you can bet on odd and even numbers, and even on groups of numbers. For example, you can bet whether the ball will land on the first 12 numbers or not.

The Difference

What’s the difference between all these bets? Well, the main difference is that the probability is different, and so is the payout. For example, the lowest probability in roulette is the ball landing on the exact same number that you bet on.

There are 36 numbers (37 if you count zero and 38 for American roulette, which has two zero sockets). In that case, you’ll usually receive a 35x payout.

On the other hand, the probability is higher that the ball is going to land on one of the two colors you select as an outside bet. However, the payout is going to be much lower compared to betting on a single number. In this case, the payout is 1:1, meaning that if you bet $10, you’ll receive $10 more as a prize.

So, what’s the best option for you? There is no definitive answer to that question. Roulette is a game of chance, and it’s up to you to decide how much you are willing to risk for a bigger prize.
